Amnael is the last of the Seven Stars, and probably the one with the most backstory, too. He's actually Daitokuji, turned into a shadow duelist by a twist of fate.
Amnael's real identity is revealed to be Daitokuji-sensei, and as his story is explained in said teacher's profile, I'm not going to go incredibly in-depth here, but he was once a skilled alchemist who, like many past alchemists, searched for the legendary Philosopher's Stone. But he searched so hard and so long that he contracted a fatal illness or two. To prevent his death, he created a homunculus, an artificial body, and placed his soul into it. It began to decay over time, and so before his death, he must obtain the power of the three legendary demons for the person who sponsored his research. With their power, he says, it will be possible to obtain -- or even create -- the Philosopher's Stone.
All in all, Amnael is the same Daitokuji that Juudai and his friends always knew, but with a shady past weighing him down. He is only a member of the Seven Stars to help repay the person who supported his research through everything, not because he truly wants to be evil. Although Amnael is defeated in the end, he's happy to have been defeated by a student who has grown in every way possible throughout the year, and accepts his loss.
Strangely enough, before he has the opportunity to cross over to the afterlife, Pharaoh swallows his soul. How this is possible, the world may never know, but it happens, and it thus helps to create some guest appearances by Daitokuji (who is now an oddly tangible ball of light).
