At first, Manjoume starts out as a selfish, ruthless duelist who's only in the game to win and to humiliate the other duelist. He begins his Academy days as a stuck-up, self-absorbed upperclassman with little respect for anyone else around him (except for those above him, such as Kaiser). After a mortifying defeat at the hands of Juudai, he changes his strategy. Manjoume then loses a second time to Juudai during the skill test, even after using his rare and powerful V-Z deck. But the last straw was in his duel with Misawa, in which his position in Obelisk Blue was threatened by his recent multiple losses. He ends up losing to Misawa's water deck, and is questioned by the others if he's a true duelist because he can't see the importance of his cards.
As a result of this string of losses, Manjoume flees the Academy by ferry in the hopes his life in the Academy doesn't end in disaster. A mysterious old man directs him to North Academy, but he first must collect 40 cards for a new deck. After a lot of effort, he does so, but lies saying ends up having 41 total in the end, trying to give the "useless" card, Ojama Yellow, to the old man. However, Ojama Yellow convinces him to let him stay with Manjoume, because he has family he would like him to help him find. So Manjoume ends up giving another card to the old man, and the old man sees how kind Manjoume really is.
At North Academy, Manjoume is forced to duel 50 students from lowest level to highest until he reaches the king of the North School. He does so successfully, and eventually wins against the king, but not after an argument with Ojama Yellow that made the North School students think he was crazy (as they can't see duel spirits). He was then accepted at North School as their new king, and as a result was pitted against Juudai in a North School versus Duel Academy match. He returns to Duel Academy for the duel, complete with an all-new wardrobe.
At this point his two older brothers, Chousaku and Shouji, are introduced, and it is revealed that he is the youngest of the three brothers who together run the Manjoume Group. They also put a lot of pressure on him to win. It has a great effect on him, moreso than he likes to show in public; Juudai spots him in the bathroom before the match crying and talking to himself about how he must always win and not become the dropout of the family, and how everyone relies on him to win in his chosen field of dueling. This indicates that Manjoume has much more stress and pent up tension than he cares to show to anyone else.
The duel begins, and Manjoume appears to be doing well, until Juudai makes a come-from-behind victory. Before he makes his last draw, he tells Manjoume he would like to duel him seriously -- not while he's got pressure on him to win from his brothers, but while he's having fun with the duel. Manjoume had honestly never thought about the fun of the duel before Juudai told him about it, but he doesn't have a lot of time to think about it, as Juudai makes the miracle draw he needs and defeats Manjoume. His brothers are livid, both because he lost and because he didn't use the deck they spent so much money on for him, but Juudai and Chronos step in and tell them to back off of him. Manjoume tells them to shut up so he doesn't look more miserable than he is. And to add to his suffering, because of his three month absence, he is demoted to Osiris Red.
After these events, Juudai begins to teach Manjoume the value of respect and friendship in dueling and in real life. Manjoume grudgingly goes along with it, and at times will let his friendship with Juudai show -- though he doesn't exactly like to admit his frienship with Juudai publicly. He and Ojama Yellow also eventually come across the other two Ojama brothers, Ojama Green and Ojama Black, in an abandoned well while looking for cards. Manjoume learns the power of the Ojama deck and masters it in a duel against his brother Chousaku, in which control of Duel Academy is at stake. Manjoume is not allowed to use any monsters above 500 attack points, but he finds a way around it using the Ojamas and comes out victorious and with a new outlook on dueling.
Manjoume has also been love-stricken by Asuka from the moment the series began. These feelings of his build up until he can no longer control them, and, with Fubuki's help, he challenges Asuka to a love duel. Manjoume tries to sway Asuka using romantic cards and by saying romantic things, but it doesn't work, as she eventually defeats him. But this doesn't stop him from loving her in the least; he still fanboys over her when he imagines her in an idol dress and roots for her during her and Fubuki's duel.
Later, Manjoume is the first student on the island to succumb to Saiou's brainwashing technique. He is flung into a duel with Saiou, and before he knew it he was brainwashed into what was the start of the Hikari no Kessha. He, in turn, brainwashed many other students, including Asuka and Misawa. He threw away his Ojama cards for a new, stronger deck, that of the White Knights. During the Genex tournament, when Juudai challengs him to a duel, it takes a combined effort of the Ojamas and Juudai to bring Manjoume to his senses and snap him out of the brainwashing.
The new Manjoume is a lot more respectful, however, he still likes to tell people to shut up, and is still learning about the bonds of friendship and respect for and importance of the cards he uses. He remains on somewhat negative terms with Misawa, and still holds a grudge against him, as well as against Juudai -- in fact, especially against Juudai. This grudge resurfaces when Manjoume becomes White Thunder, in which he is driven by his urge to finally defeat Juudai in a duel. He's undergone a lot of changes since the start of the series, and probably will undergo many more in the future.
